SF ahead of FF in polls in wake of smear scandal

- By Craig Hughes

SINN Féin has climbed above Fianna Fáil for the first time in the polls after apparently receiving a significant boost in public support in the wake of the cervical cancer controversy.

Two separate polls in two different newspapers today show a significant boost for Sinn Féin, while both polls also show a sobering drop in support for Fianna Fáil.

The Behaviour & Attitudes (B&A) poll in today’s Sunday Times shows Sinn Féin jumping 3% to 24%, marginally ahead of Fianna Fáil who lose 2% to fall to 23%. The poll also shows a decrease in support for Fine Gael of 3%, placing them at 30%.

However, the Red C poll for the Sunday Business Post shows contrasting fortunes for Fine Gael with a boost of 2% pushing them 9% ahead of Fianna Fáil – who despite embarrassing the Government earlier this week by ensuring the digital age of consent would be 16 instead 13 as proposed by Fine Gael – remain unchanged at 25%.

Independents and Others increased in one poll, but dropped in the other, leaving them at 9% and 10%.

Labour remain unchanged at 6% in the Red C poll, but dropped to 4% in the B&A poll.
