NOW
that your pockets are empty from shelling out on Ed Sheeran, The Rolling Stones, Michael Bublé, Taylor Swift and Electric Picnic tickets, remember there is one great free show in the capital every day: the National Gallery in Merrion Square is among the best galleries in the world.
Forty years ago, in 1978, the Chester Beatty bequest – including paintings by Vermeer, Velasquez and Steen – was put on public display, which marked a turning point in the development of the gallery.
Every day there are free lectures, tours and talks in the magnificently refurbished building. My favourite is the upcoming mindfulness tour on Sunday, June 9.
As well as ‘moving slowly and mindfully through the gallery spaces, you will encounter each work with curiosity, allowing you to connect deeply with it’.
The free guided tour will end ‘with quiet reflection in silence and stillness’.
Now that’s worth shouting about!
