you ever have the feeling you’re inhabiting three different worlds at once? Roughly, say, 2018, 1968 and 1918? Take Donegal, where a nightclub has removed an offensive billboard. The ad showed a woman’s backside with the tagline: ‘Your 19th hole for the summer.’ So yes, they took it down. But come on, they put it up? Did they fail to spot that second wave of feminism nearly half a century ago? Meanwhile, France is planning fines for men who catcall or wolf-whistle women. The move sounds ultra-21st century but for this: gender equality minister Marlene Schiappa says this behaviour makes women ‘afraid to leave their homes’. Afraid? Parisienne women? Hello again, females needing protection. Hello again, pre-feminism. Never thought we’d see you back.
