Peter the great, but not such a great prediction

-

HE may have lost what little hair he had, as well as a couple of yards of pace, but Peter Canavan is as cute a pundit as he was gifted as a player.

I was told recently that he had predicted Tyrone would win the All-Ireland, so I had to read it for myself.

Good job too, because while once he drifted with menace between the lines, now you have to read between them.

He actually stated that he believed Tyrone would win an All-Ireland, but there was no commitment as to when that would be.

I suspect that like his old teammate Conor Gormley – who suggested the Red Hands do not have the forwards to win the AllIreland this year — that Peter is of the same view deep down.

I certainly am. They get the show on the road today in what is likely to be a tight affair against Monaghan. It is a big game as well for Malachy O’Rourke’s team who have struggled to bring Allianz League form to the All-Ireland series.

It may well be that they have invested too much in seeking to retain their top-flight status, making it hard to raise their game to a different level come the summer.

Tyrone, with home advantage and a half-back line which can shift a bit, will win today and win Ulster, too.

After that, I am with Canavan. I am sure they will win an AllIreland some year, just not this one.
