Tribute to Savita becomes site of poignant pilgrimage
HUNDREDS of touching tributes were placed at a Dublin mural in memory of Savita Halappanavar yesterday as the scale of the Yes vote emerged.
The 31-year-old died in 2012 due to a septic miscarriage in Galway University Hospital. In the years that followed, she became the face of the repeal movement.
The mural was installed near the Bernard Shaw pub in Portobello on the eve of Friday’s vote. By yesterday, the modest stretch of wall had drawn visitors of all ages, with many leaving floral tributes or writing their own messages of sadness and hope on pro-repeal leaflets which they could affix to the image.
One such note read: ‘Savita, you died in the hospital I was born in.
‘I am so sorry for what our country did to you and so grateful to Praveen and your family for speaking out. Never again.’
