How we voted, and what made up our minds

RTE’S exit poll revealed a variety of insights into how the nation voted. It posed a series of questions to 3,800 voters, asking them about the reasons they voted as they did in the referendum and at what point they had made up their minds.

ASKED WHEN THEY DECIDED HOW TO VOTE:

■ 75% always knew

■ 8% after Savita Halappanav­ar’s death in 2012

■ 1% after Citizens’ Assembly report in June 2017

■ 12% during the campaign

■ 1% after Oireachtas Committee’s report December 2017

ASKED TO NAME A SOURCE (OR SOURCES) THAT INFLUENCED THEIR VOTE:

■ 43% personal stories in media

■ 34% experience of people they knew

■ 10% campaign posters

■ 7% direct contact with campaigner­s

■ 24% other
