COME DOWN TO EARTH
Look after your soil and everything else will follow. Billions upon billions of lifeforms teem within the soil of your back garden – primarily bacteria, fungae and nematodes – which are every bit as important as the more recognisably cuddly animals like hedgehogs or robins. This is wildlife that you will never see but which is the foundation for every creature in your garden – as well as the robust health of all your precious plants.
One of the best ways to improve the diversity and health of your soil is to set up and maintain a composting system. A working compost heap will recycle all your household and garden waste and enrich the soil with literally millions of wild animals – albeit rather small – with every shovel load. As well as the environmental benefits, a rich, healthy soil will encourage healthy plants and all who live off or around them.
