GOLDEN GIRLS
It’s the latest look-at-me trend to sweep the red carpet, but who has what it takes to truly glitter among the...
WEARING gold – even in a bangle, let alone an entire frock – is tricky. Despite the designer tag, it can look a little cheap – especially if you have a deep tan, blonde hair and are aboard a yacht with someone bald and fat. But despite all these provisos, gold is a huge trend this summer after it appeared everywhere on the catwalk, from Vuitton to Valentino.
How to pull it off? Keep the rest of your look simple – avoid jewellery, too much make-up and snazzy bags. It also helps if you have olive or black skin. And if, like the fashion for gold lamé, you came of age in the early 1980s, proceed with caution. As Kylie Minogue, right, proves when you are over 50, a darker gold is much more forgiving.
The women on these pages are all very ‘look at me’. If you are slightly less confident and want to dazzle onlookers but not blind them, I suggest sticking to a gold print or appliqué.
Why now? To quote London designer Michael Halpern: ‘If it feels like the world is going down, I try to go in the other direction. All this doom and gloom… people need escapism.’
Quite right.
