Dettori scotches quit rumour

- – GRAHAM CLARK

FRANKIE DETTORI has insisted he plans to ride for another five years after rubbishing retirement rumours that circulated at Epsom.

Talk at the track on Derby day suggested the 47-year-old was on the verge of calling time on his glittering career, and that he could even do so following his ride on Hazapour in the big race.

But the legend put speculation to bed in the wake of his victory aboard the Martyn Meade-trained Wilamina in the Group Three Princess Elizabeth Stakes. After performing one of his trademark flying dismounts, he said: ‘I’m not retiring. There is a rumour going around saying that I’m going to retire after the Derby. I’m definitely not retiring and you definitely have another five years of putting up with me.’

Dettori rode his 3,000th winner in 2016, and currently stands fifth in the list of winning most jockeys in Britain, behind Gordon Richards, Pat Eddery, Lester Piggott and Willie Carson.
