Connacht SFC semi-final Galway v Sligo, Pearse Stadium, 3.30pm Referee:

-

Noel Mooney (Cavan) This will hardly be as easy as the tipsters suggests – Galway are 1/16 to reach a third consecutive provincial final – and, most likely, it will be even harder to watch.

Kevin Walsh has managed to do the best impersonation of Jim McGuinness’ Donegal that we have seen yet – they defend in numbers, tackle with ferocious aggression, break with speed and have a close to unmarkable target man in the fullforward line in Damien Comer.

It has worked for them but it will only carry them so far and Sligo might expose the reason why in this encounter.

Cathal Corey worked with McGuinness at club level and he knows a thing or two about defence. Above all, he knows you can’t be counter-attacked if you don’t attack yourself in the first instance.

Expect a game of poker which Galway will win but not before Sligo expose the reality that while McGuinness’ masterplan was quite effective, it was eventually figured out and countered.

Verdict: Galway
