SENATOR WANTS US TO REJOIN COMMONWEALTH
A LEADING Fine Gael senator has called for Ireland to rejoin the Commonwealth.
In the wake of the Taoiseach’s successful Northern visit on Friday, Frank Feighan said: ‘If we want to secure a position of full unity across the island we need to reach out to the one-fifth of our country which has an allegiance to the monarchy.
‘If we are serious about building on this and creating an agreed Ireland we have to deal with the Commonwealth issue.
‘In the case of an agreed Ireland becoming a possibility; re-entering the Commonwealth would be a pre-occupation of moderate unionism.
‘We have to move on from old prejudices if we want to reimagine the relationship between the two traditions.’
