We lose the abil­ity to hear high fre­quency as we age, mak­ing it dif­fi­cult to make out con­ver­sa­tion in crowded places. But a larger outer ear, like a bat’s, would fun­nel more sound down the ear canal. Al­ter­na­tively, a mo­bile ear, like a cat’s, would give us greater di­rec­tional con­trol, al­low­ing us to block out back­ground noise.
