oUR largest or­gan is a fan­tas­tic wa­ter­proof shield. But while we pro­duce me­lanin to block the sun’s Uv rays, we do it too slowly to pre­vent dam­age. Darker, me­lanin-rich skin in­hibits the pro­duc­tion of vi­ta­min D, which pro­motes bone growth. In­stead we need the skin of an am­phib­ian to re­lease me­lanin quickly to block Uv or let light in for fast vi­ta­min D pro­duc­tion.
