Ranking 15. Last time Last 16. Manager Juan Carlos Osorio — Mexico took a 16-match unbeaten run into the Copa America Centenario two years ago, made it 19 in the group stage, but were thrashed 7-0 by Chile in the quarter-finals. Fourth at the Confederations Cup, with Osorio suspended for six games by FIFA for confronting officials during the thirdplace play-off with Portugal.

They’re a bit like Arsenal — struggle to get past the last 16. Key man Andres Guardado (right) — the 31year-old captain is closing in on his 150th appearance for Mexico over 13 years. This will be his fourth World Cup and he’ll be desperate to break the last 16 elimination curse. A reliable presence both on and off the field, the Real Betis man is important to the side’s balance.

Rising star Hirving Lozano — having joined from Pachuca, Lozano has impressed for PSV Eindhoven, scoring 19 goals in 34 matches. If he adds to his seven international goals, no doubt he will command a high asking price by the end of the World Cup.

Prospects Second place in the group will see them drawn against Brazil in the last 16.
