Maguire is riding high in America

GOLF: Leona Maguire is well in contention for a win in her debut profession­al event after a fourunder-par second round of 67 at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in Gaolloway, New Jersey. The former world No1 amateur from Cavan had five birdies and an eagle in her second effort in the three-round tournament. When storms halted proceeding­s with most of the early starters finished, Maguire was three off the lead at six under par. Her sister Leona, also in her debut pro event, was struggling further down the field.

BOXING: Irish lightweigh­t Kellie Harrington guaranteed herself a medal at the Women’s European Boxing Championsh­ips in Sofia, Bulgaria after she beat Iuliia Tsyplakova. Harrington and Michael Walsh will fight in the semi-finals tomorrow.

F1: Sebastian Vettel will start on pole position in today’s Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal after qualifying. The Ferrari man (right) will share the front row with Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was third with Lewis Hamilton only fourth. ‘Yesterday we were a bit in trouble, I was not really happy with the car and I could not get the rhythm. Today was switched on and what a day,’ said Vettel.

RUGBY: Ireland’s men’s sevens team kept up their good form by qualifying for the quarter-final of this weekend’s World Series event in Paris. After coming third in London last week, Stan McDowell’s side beat Spain 14-5, drew 19-19 with Wales and then defeated Australia 24-14 to finish top of their pool and set up a quarter-final with Canada this morning.
