Garden stroll for Cavan as Reilly proves spot on

- By Seán O’Connell

CAVAN 2-16 WICKLOW 1-5

CAVAN had one foot in the second round of the football qualifiers at half-time in this clash with Wicklow in Aughrim when they were ahead by 2-8 to 0-1.

The goals had come via Martin Reilly, who netted from a penalty, and Ciarán Brady with the hosts’ sole reply coming from Rory Finn in the second quarter.

Wicklow’s goal was netted late on by James Stafford and served as a very small consolation as their Leinster SFC victory over Offaly seemed a very long way away.

Cavan will now hope that this back door victory can get them back on track after being dumped out of the Ulster Championship last month by Donegal.

They wasted no time in getting into their stride here and Reilly’s converted penalty, following a foul on Killian Clarke, set an early tone.
