Only four rural villages get CCTV
A CAMPAIGN to install more CCTV cameras in rural villages has stalled despite concern about crime. A key part of the government response to rural crime has been to give grants to small communities to install CCTV systems.
But despite demand the Department of Justice has told Fianna Fáil TD Shane Cassells that just four community anti-crime CCTV systems have been set up this year. The scheme has been dogged by claims that it is bureaucratic, with just €120,000 allocated. Four more villages are currently being considered but Mr Cassells said the system must be made more user friendly.
