Galway have all bases covered for trip to Hyde

-

THE one blessing of a football weekend far too quiet for its own good is that, at least, we have a game worthy of centre stage.

Indeed, of the four provincial finals, today’s clash between Galway and Roscommon is the most compelling.

I have huge admiration for Kevin McStay as a football man – it took real courage to leave the TV studio and choose to walk the walk.

He has done a tremendous job as well – two promotions and a Connacht title is not to be sniffed at – and I believe they were in excellent form when beating Cork in a behind-closed-doors challenge game recently.

And with home advantage – something which was only secured after the stance taken by McStay in the first instance - they have a real shout today of defending their title, but my money is on Galway.

The most impressive aspect of Galway’s win over Sligo last time out was the team Kevin Walsh picked.

After beating Mayo, he was still quite comfortable in making four changes which is evidence of the depth of options at his disposal.

That keeps everyone on their toes, but it also means he can vary his team to suit the opposition. He started Eamonn Brannigan and Ian Burke the last day to show that when they want to play attacking football, they have to players to do that.

Michael Daly, who is an exceptional talent with the physical stature for the senior game, has yet to make his first start this summer which pretty much says it all as to where Galway stand right now – at the very front of the pack trying to chase Dublin down.
