Former minister Callely is charged with harassment

- By Nicola Byrne

FORMER minister Ivor Callely has been charged with harassment and will face a court hearing next month, the Irish Mail on Sunday can reveal.

The ex-Fianna Fáil TD was charged on Thursday afternoon over an incident at a property on the Howth Road in Killester, Co Dublin, in June 2017.

He will appear at the District Court at the Parkgate Street courts complex in July.

Mr Callely’s charge arises from the incident which happened a year ago when he was questioned by gardaí about an allegation of harassment at the same property. At that time, the now 60-year-old was held for questioning at Clontarf Garda station and a file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to the matter.

It is understood Mr Calley is not the owner of the property, but leases it.

When contacted by the MoS yesterday, Mr Callely refused to answer questions about the charge being brought against him. ‘Thanks a million,’ he replied, when questioned and promptly hung up. In response to queries, a Garda spokesperson said they do not comment on individual cases. Known for his colourful past, Mr Callely has in recent years been working as a used car salesman. His business, GPS Car Sales, is also based at 191 Howth Road, Killester, Dublin. It continues to advertise car sales online, where it is described as ‘an independent supplier of new and high quality second hand cars’.

Mr Callely is not currently listed as a director of any business, according to the Companies Registration Office.

In 2013, he consented to an €11m judgment being entered against him at the High Court by the Irish branch of Investec Bank plc. It arose from a March 2007 loan agreement under which €9.85m was advanced to Mr Callely and three other borrowers to purchase property.

The father of three resigned from FF in 2010, after being first elected in 1989. He was made a junior minister in 2002.
