‘Remainers’ in defiant march on Westminster
TENS of thousands of people opposed to Brexit marched on Westminster yesterday to demand a final vote on any UK exit deal.
The event, which coincided with the second anniversary of the EU referendum and marks the start of what campaigners describe as a ‘summer of action’, saw crowds pack into Parliament Square in London.
Some waved EU flags and others carried placards reading: ‘17million voted for Adolf Hitler. 17 million voted for Brexit. 17million can be wrong.’
Gina Miller, who successfully campaigned to ensure the UK could not trigger Brexit talks without the approval of parliament, told marchers: ‘Together we must stand up, demand our voices are heard, demand a people’s vote so that future generations can hear us say we did our bit. We stood up and shouted for a country that’s together, kinder, tolerant.’
Hundreds of pro-Brexit supporters held a rival protest, but fears of violence proved unfounded. Scotland Yard said there had been no arrests.
