Dapper Gaybo shines at Derby
IT was one of the hottest days of the year and the sunshine brought out the big names for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby yesterday.
For a start, there was TV3 presenter Glenda Gilson, and stablemate Alan Hughes – but the undoubted star was broadcasting legend Gay Byrne making a rare appearance with his wife Kathleen Watkins.
Byrne, 83, has been keeping a low profile since his 2016 prostate cancer diagnosis, but attended the Curragh racecourse in Co. Kildare to place a few bets.
Toting a panama hat, Byrne looked dapper, and reported that he was feeling ‘okay… I’m doing what I’m told and I’m following instructions and that’s all I can do’.
And he told the Irish Mail on Sunday, ‘Everyone is telling me how wonderful I look. If I only felt as wonderful as I looked I would be doing terrific.’
The event was also attended by former Six One newsreader Anne Doyle and the eternally stylish Celia Holman Lee.
The coveted best dressed prize, which includes a trip to Dubai and a stay in the K Club, was won by Regina Horan of Malahide. She stunned in a red Self Portrait dress, a raffia hat and a Miu Miu bag.
