LETTER OF THE WEEK
Don’t lecture Church, Leo
I FOUND Leo Varadkar’s comments about the Church this week deplorable. He said he believes ‘in equality in all things and in the workplace, and that would include allowing priests to marry, allowing women to become priests’.
Then he added that he believed strongly in the separation of church and state.
Well, if he really believes in that separation, he should shut up and keep out of the Catholic Church’s internal affairs.
‘Equality’ has become this magic word to be declaimed and applied to all things, ever since the gay marriage referendum was successfully branded a ‘marriage equality’ vote. Varadkar is clearly very proud of his liberalism but fails to see how stultifying and opposed to individual liberty his views actually are. He has nothing but contempt for views that don’t conform with his own very narrow outlook. Helen O’Dea, Bray, Co. Wicklow.
