Although Britain’s Princess Margaret earned lots of sympathy at the time of her doomed love affair with Peter Townsend, she was never as popular as her older sister, Queen Elizabeth. Reading Craig Brown’s gloriously acerbic portrait, it’s not hard to see why. She was egocentric, wilful and bloodyminded. And that was on a good day.
