WHY TRUMP IS WRONG ABOUT NATO
DONALD Trump’s attack on the supposed unfairness of the contribution by European countries, including Germany, to Nato is exceptionally scary.
Trump, inset, wants Germany to increase military spending to 2% of national income.
It currently spends about €40bn on defence, or about 1.3% of income.
That pays for 180,000 active military personnel.
The problem is, that’s within touching distance of both France and Britain. France has 205,000 active military personnel on the books, with a defence budget of around €40bn as well – while Britain has a miltary budget of €43bn. It doesn’t take a genius to work out how those figures would look if Germany upped spending to 2%. Germany already has economic hegemony in Europe. And considering all we know about German aggression in recent history, who could possibly think it’s a good idea to allow them military dominance as well?
