Let GAA heart rule

-

IN the past, the GAA has proved itself flexible, innovative and generous when called upon, not least when it threw open Croke Park to rugby and soccer during the building of the Aviva Stadium. Its refusal to allow the Liam Millar testimonial match in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, against the will of the Cork County Board – and, judging by the responses this week, the majority of its membership – may be sticking by the rules, but it displayed a reversal of previous generosity of spirit.

The clear path is to treat the testimonial not as a sporting event, but a fundraising, one already allowed in the rulebook. The match should go ahead in the Páirc.
