It used to be that people watched the British royal family so as to feel better about their own next of kin. Every silly domestic row, every pointless grudge – all was as nothing compared to the loveless manoeuvrings of the Windsors. Not any more, now that Meghan Markle has joined the crew. Now when we want to see what a truly dysfunctional family looks like, we turn to Meghan’s people instead. She has a gabby father who indirectly blamed her for having a heart attack that reports this week say he didn’t actually have. She has an estranged half-brother who urged Prince Harry to call off the wedding. And she has an estranged half-sister who is publishing a memoir that was initially going to be called ‘the Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister’. In the history of the British crown, Meghan Markle has been a first in many ways, but she’s also got to be the first person to escape an even crazier family by marrying into the royals.
