Jason set to f ly f lag for Ireland on K2

- By Stephen Maguire

AN Irishman is on the verge of conquering the world’s most dangerous mountain.

Donegal man Jason Black has now reached a staggering 25,600ft (7.8km) on K2 and has reached camp four on the climb.

And today he hopes to plant an Irish flag on the mountain which has claimed hundreds of lives.

Mr Black is poised to become only the second Irish person to summit the mountain, after Limerickman Ger McDonnell. Mr McDonnell died along with ten other climbers as he descended the mountain in August 2008 following an avalanche.

The Letterkenny native hopes to be able to summit the 28,251ft (8.6km) mountain on the China-Pakistan border with a final push today.

In a message to family and friends he said he feels ‘super strong and excited’ as he reaches the final stages of his journey.

Mr Black, who scaled Everest in 2013, was forced to abandon a previous attempt at K2 in 2015 due to an avalanche.
