What I’m reading for the summer

- RICHARD DOWNES PRIME TIME PRESENTER

I tend to shift from heavy historical and international affairs reading to something more fictional and local and light during the summer, but I’m not quite there yet.

At the moment I’m reading the fine and detailed account of the Six Day War – Six Days Of War: June 1967 And The Making of the Modern Middle East by Michael Oren. Many will be put off by the forensic and academic nature of the book but I love it. I always have at least one book on the region on-the-go. For the holidays I’m looking forward to reading some Seamus Heaney – 100 Poems published by Faber & Faber. Getting time to decompress and forget about all the BrexitTrump-refugee axis is essential and poetry is the best way for me.

I’ve just started reading an excellent overview of my beloved Dublin Bay – Dublin Bay: Nature and History by Richard Nairn, David Jeffrey and Rob Goodbody which is published by Collins Press.

As I will be spending most of my holidays tramping over Howth Hill to improve my fitness, this will be an invaluable companion.
