What I’m reading for the summer
There is nothing I like better than sitting outside with a book, and this summer has been wonderful for everyone who loves reading outdoors. The unexpected hit of the summer for me so far has been Tangerine by Christine Mangan which is a must for anyone who enjoys Patricia Highsmith’s writing. Set in the 1950s, the dusty heat and atmosphere of Tangiers almost burns the pages as this psychological thriller unfolds. I’m also looking forward to Claire Allan’s foray into thrillers with Her Name Was Rose, the story of a woman who takes over another woman’s life. As a relief from suspense I thoroughly recommend Sophie Kinsella’s Surprise Me which combines her trademark humour with a tender storyline about keeping a marriage interesting. Anne Tyler’s Clock Dance is a beautifully written exploration of where our choices lead us (and how it’s never too late to change), perfect for summer reading. Finally, for anyone heading off on a flight, Cockpit Confidential by Patrick Smith tells you everything you wanted to know (and maybe some things you didn’t) about what’s happening in the air.
Sheila O’Flanagan’s book, The Hideaway, €12.74, is out now in trade paperback.
