Deirdre Duke was the hero for Ireland with two goals as they began their World Cup campaign in London with a splendid 3-1 win over United States. In a hugely impressive overall performance, Duke opened the scoring after five minutes after Roisin Upton found her with a superb ball. Duke dragged Jackie Briggs from her goal and rounded her to score a fine opener. It was 2-0 to Ireland when Shirley McCay scored from a penalty corner. The States pulled one back in the 15th minute through Margaux Paolino’s well-worked penalty corner. Duke added her second in the 41st minute to put Ireland top of Pool B with England and India drawing 1-1. Ireland wil hope to carry the feelgood factor into Thursday’s clash with India.

AUSSIE RULES:

Zach Tuohy scored the winning goal for the Geelong Cats after the siren sounded, as his team came from 10 points behind to beat Melbourne 100-98. The Laois man took a fabulous mark with seconds left and the siren sounded for the end of the game before he took it. He said: ‘It’s kind of a dream after the siren to win the game – it was a pretty special moment and I’m obviously pretty happy that it went through.’
