Photographer snaps Rory’s concentration
RORY McIlroy blamed a photographer for being ‘in a world of his own’ as he dropped a crucial shot late in the day at Carnoustie.
McIlroy put his finger to his lips in admonishment after missing a six-footer for par on the demanding 16th.
The 2014 Open champion was kicking himself for a loose finish which saw him finish on five under par after a 70.
‘I just need to get off to a fast start tomorrow. I’m obviously disappointed after the way I finished, but I’m still in the tournament,’ he said.
‘I’m only a few shots behind. The wind is supposed to pick up a little bit so it will make things interesting.’
McIlroy will again go on the front foot as he did yesterday where his strategy was let down by indifferent approach play, a stubborn refusal of some putts to drop, and a clicking camera on 16.
‘I felt the course was perfectly set up to take advantage of it and attack it. Tried to do that for the most part. Maybe my wedge play wasn’t quite as good as it should have been.’
Never before have McIlroy, Spieth and Woods fought each other for major glory.
‘I feel like I’m rolling,’ said Spieth after an extraordinary afternoon.
