Just the same old song about us having to bail 2fm out

-

INTERESTING quotes this week from 2fm boss Dan Healy on the new JNLR figures showing modest listenership gains at the station. Healy, pictured, sounded positively huffy about anyone who predicted the death of 2fm. ‘Those people who said there was no future for the station know nothing about radio,’ he was quoted as saying. But I can’t remember the last time I heard someone saying there was no future for 2fm. More recently the conversation has been less about predicting its death and more about calling for someone to euthanise it once and for all. And here’s why: ‘We’ve shown that when we’re funded, we can create Irish audiences,’ Healy said. But we don’t want to fund 2fm, Dan, don’t you understand? We want 2fm to make it on its own, like it used to do and like other music stations seem to be able to do. We want it to stop sucking up licence fee revenue and running a loss. We want it to help fund public service broadcasting and desist from the farcical claim of being a public service broadcaster itself. It’s not that people see no future for 2fm; it’s that people don’t want a future for 2fm on these terms.
