...and restaurant feels rousing royal effect

- By Martin Healy

OFF the beaten track, one Dublin restaurant whose name is associated with James Joyce’s Ulysses is seeing bookings rise faster than a souffle.

Delahunt on Camden Street was the restaurant of choice for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on an unscheduled lunch date during their recent whistlestop tour of the capital.

Already well established for its offering, with tables hard to find, manager Grace Davis said they are now unfortunately having to turn custom away such is demand after they received the royal seal of approval.

And they are seeing a pick-up in calls and drop-ins from American tourists, in particular, given the love of the former Suits actress. The cosy spot only has 14 tables, with an overall capacity for 45 people, so space is now at an even higher premium.

The royal couple nibbled on smoked salmon for their starter, with Prince Harry following with roast lamb, while Meghan opted for roast hake – all washed down with a glass of Guinness for Meghan and a Coke for Harry. The two-course meal would have set them back €34 each, not including drinks, although this rises to €39 at weekends.

In less than a year at Delahunt, the team was awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand 2016, and again for 2017/2018.

Situated in a Victorian building, the name Delahunt is already immortalised in Ulysses, when it fed the masses.
