Barbecue alert after dog’s lifesaving corn op
PET owners have been warned to keep their animals away from barbecues after a dog almost died swallowing an entire cob of corn.
The greedy canine, a four-year-old boxer called Vivienne, was found to have helped herself to the snack by vets at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. She had arrived there as a stray after being found roaming the streets.
Puzzled that she was unable to keep food down, staff performed an X-ray which revealed the presence of a ‘foreign body’.
Lifesaving surgery to remove it revealed the cob of corn – more than likely from a summer barbecue.
Head vet Shaun Opperman said: ‘Dogs can be opportunists and may be tempted to steal food from the barbecue. It’s so important that owners keep food out of reach of their dogs.’
