Francis to use John Paul’s chalice
POPE Francis will use a chalice which holds a special connection between the Holy See and Ireland during the final Mass of his visit.
According to Minister of Ceremonies for the World Meeting of Families, Fr Damian McNeice, the chalice has been specially chosen as it was used during the 1979 Mass by Pope John Paul II before more than a million people.
The chalice was also used during the Eucharistic Congress in 2012, when 80,000 people filled Croke Park to hear a video message from Pope Benedict XVI.
Fr McNeice said the chalice was a gift to the people of Ireland from Pope Pius XII.
