A Double Life

The ghost of Lord Lucan looms over this psychological mystery. Its heroine is Claire, a London GP with a troubled brother and an all-consuming hobby: trying to find their father, who vanished almost 30 years ago, having allegedly murdered their nanny. Some of the clues Claire stumbles on are overly convenient, but it’s an engrossing bit of storytelling let down only by its author’s nationality: she is American and her understanding of the class system lacks nuance, while her evocation of place relies on tourist snapshots.
