Derry show little mercy to Cup hosts

- By John O’Shea

IT WAS one-way traffic here as Derry City hit double figures when cruising to victory. The difference between the Premier Division side and Munster Senior outfit Blarney United was all too evident from the outset with Alistair Roy scoring four times in the Candystripes’ facile success.

Kenny Shiels’ side took the lead after just four minutes when Roy set up Ronan Hale from close range.

It was 7-0 at the interval with Hale completing a brace and Aaron McEneff (below) also on the double – his first a superb curling effort from outside the box – while Roy had a hat-trick before the break.

The visitors might have been further ahead at half-time but McEneff missed out on joining Roy on a hat-trick when failing to convert a penalty.

Shane McNamee got goal number eight for Derry shortly into the second half, following a driving run and finish.

There was no letting up from the away side who got their ninth thanks to a Roy tap in.

The Candystripes hit double figures through Cathal Farren, before David Welch and Thomas Carroll got consolation goals for Blarney.

However, there was more misery for the hosts as they conceded further goals before the end with Kevin McHattie and McNamee underlining Derry’s domination.

Already in the EA Sports Cup decider, the cup competitions look set to play a massive part in the remainder of Derry City’s campaign.
