Hunt’s treble sinks Skerries

- – JOHN FALLON

FRESH from opening his league account against Cork City last week, Waterford’s Noel Hunt powered in a hat-trick yesterday to help see off Skerries Town.

The Blues, currently third in the Premier Division, weren’t as dominant at the Skerries Rugby Club as the scoreline suggested, requiring two of Hunt’s goals in the final five minutes to halt a gallant comeback effort by the non-league outfit.

Former Ireland striker Hunt opened his account midway through the first half by beating Shane Davis with a long-range ddrive. The home goalkeeper was beaten again nine minutes before the break as Gavan Holohan swept home Paul Keegan’s corner.

Skerries improved following the resumption and Brian Snowe’s deflected shot found the top corner on 53 minutes. Shane Langan spurned a glorious chance to equalise with a free header and they the hosts were punished by a couple of headed finishes from the lively Hunt in the closing stages to ward off a possible giant-killing.
