Spurs relying on a lack of injuries to stay in the top four

-

A VERY good transfer deadline day for some Premier League clubs. A complete disaster for others. Well, Tottenham.

Not signing a single player in the transfer window is crazy. If you cannot refresh your squad and give it a boost you will struggle. I do not think Tottenham will be in the top four this season. They were very fortunate to win at Newcastle yesterday.

Given Daniel Levy’s record and dealings in the transfer market over so many years, this inactivity does not come as a great surprise.

With the move to the new stadium, no doubt, as Arsenal found, the purse strings have to be tightened. That might suit Levy but not manager Mauricio Pochettino.

I cannot imagine he is happy about the lack of a single new face. Spurs have had a good injury record but he knows they cannot rely on that. If Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen or Dele Alli suffer a long-term injury, they are in serious trouble.

Signing Kane (left) up to a new deal was a massive move for Spurs. Failing to build on it with new blood – any new blood – could be very costly.

Over at Goodison Park, the quality of the signings Everton have made is a cut above anything the club has made in 25 years. When have they ever gone out and bought three players from Barcelona?

Yerry Mina, Andre Gomes and Lucas Digne are not has-beens but players in their mid-20s.

When he took over the club, Farhad Moshiri promised he would build and invest for the future. Backing Marco Silva this summer could get them to the next level – even a top-six finish.
