I DO ADMIRE JAMES, BUT...

-

I ONCE had it out with James McGrath (below). He was an umpire for referee Brian Gavin in 2004 when one of the St Rynagh’s team I was training was sent off. But I’ve admired how he has made it to the top of his game.

I just can’t see where he is coming from with his very public decision to quit over not being appointed referee for the All-Ireland final. We all have disappointments in sport. If he waited until two weeks after the match, to say his piece, that would have been fair enough.

To come out 10 days before, though, smacks of egotism. You don’t do anything but put more pressure on James Owens, who got the gig. With his message on Facebook, he dug a bit of a hole and then fell into it.

Argue your point privately and show more grace. He has officiated two finals in the past. When he reflects on this, he will regret the timing and manner of his announcement.
