Gallagher ‘more likely than not’ to run again

- By John Drennan

SEÁN GALLAGHER will decide whether to run for the presidency within a fortnight.

Senior figures informed the Irish Mail on Sunday: ‘Any decision will be made close to nomination day – it will be in the next two weeks.’

However, sources told the MoS that it is ‘more likely than not’ that Mr Higgins can expect a challenge from his rival of seven years ago.

As one source put it: ‘When the fox is still hanging around the hen-house it is more likely he will go in.’

Another source said: ‘Seán recognises there are real risks in taking on a popular incumbent but the risks are not of such a magnitude that they would put him off.’

A senior figure said: ‘This could be 2011 in reverse. Michael D could lead through the early laps and then get his heels clipped at the last.

‘He won’t be allowed sit up in the Park waving at the people like de Valera in 1966.’

Meanwhile, members of the Oireachtas yesterday received an email seeking support for an apparent bid for the áras by journalist Gemma O’Doherty.

The email was sent by Mr Séamus Ward to all members.
