1980 All-Ireland SHC Final

-

GALWAY ended their 57-year wait for All-Ireland glory on September 7, 1980 – a date enshrined in the county’s sporting folklore.

Despite a phenomenal 2-7 individual scoring performance by veteran superstar Eamonn Cregan, Limerick could not contain the exuberance of Cyril Farrell’s men who pulled clear to win by three points.

The final whistle sparked an incredible outpouring of emotion and the occasion is probably best remembered for Joe Connolly’s victory speech and the rendition of ‘The West’s Awake’ by the late Joe McDonagh.
