You have to hand it to Limerick golden girl

- By Lynne Kelleher

GAA’s newest star Martina McMahon bagged an unprecedented three golds at the World Handball Championships this week.

The 23-year-old cemented Limerick’s status as the sporting capital of Ireland, sweeping the boards at the Minnesota games on Sunday – at the same time the county’s hurlers were lifting the Liam McCarthy Cup in Croke Park.

The biomedical engineer, just home from America, said her triple win is still sinking in.

‘It wasn’t too bad at all,’ said the triple champion from her home in Broadford this week.

‘It’s a great feeling. When you talk to any youngster around here their dream is to play senior hurling with Limerick. My dream was to win a world title and, for me, my dream became a reality.’

The world champion – who has trained six nights a week for the past year – said it was extra special to clinch her world championship on the same day as the fairy tale win by the Limerick team.

‘I won’t forget it’, she said.
