McGlade builds Town base as Shels bow out

- By Deniese O’Flaherty

DYLAN McGLADE inspired Longford Town to a fine win over Shelbourne as they advanced to the quarter-finals of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup.

McGlade was a constant threat all night and scored Town’s opening goal from the penalty spot in firsthalf stoppage-time. His corner in the 72nd minute was turned into the net by Daniel O’Reilly.

It was a deserved win for Town who battled hard. They started the game brightly with Aodh Dervin shooting over on six minutes and a Dean Zambra header going just wide minutes later.

Chances were then at a premium after that as neither team got a hold on proceedings.

In the 30th minute Shelbourne had the best chance when Lorcan Fitzgerald and Adam Evans played a neat 1-2 but Fitzgerald brought an excellent point-blank save out of Town keeper Mick Kelly.

Two minutes later the visitors had another chance to open the scoring when Paddy Kavanagh found himself through on goal but Tristan NoackHofmann got back to put in a well-timed tackle.

Town broke the deadlock in the first minute of stoppage time; a ball out of defence fell to McGlade who went racing down on goal. He was taken down on the endline and a penalty was awarded which he put away.

Minutes after the interval Evans brought a fine save out of Kelly while down the other end a corner from McGlade was just headed over by Daniel O’Reilly.

McGlade was the provider for Town’s second goal in the 72nd minute when his corner was powerfully finished to the net by O’Reilly and Town held on.
