Scheme takes us for a ride
THE cycle-to-work scheme is being abused, says the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (MoS, September 2).
That’s not a bit surprising and one wonders at the wisdom of the Government dishing out money in this way that’s wide open to abuse.
Even those of us who have bought a bike under the scheme aren’t necessarily doing so well. My impression is that the cost of a bicycle rocketed in the years after this scheme was introduced.
It’s ridiculous that the Revenue Commissioners have no way of monitoring the scheme and no way of seeing how many bicycles have been bought through it.
And no doubt there is a hefty bureaucratic cost to employers and the State in administering the scheme. Scrap it and it’ll make bicycles a lot cheaper for everyone. Anne O’Dea, Dublin 12.
