1981 OFFALY v GALWAY

-

AFTER the emotional high of winning the classic 1980 decider and ending a 57year All-Ireland drought, Galway fell at the final hurdle as they looked to complete the county’s first ever back-toback success, losing 2-12 to 0-15.

The Tribe were undone by a combination of a spirited Offaly comeback and their own wastefulness. Seven points clear shortly after halftime, Galway completely fell apart, scoring only once more and hitting 14 wides in the second half alone as Offaly stormed ahead to win the Liam MacCarthy cup for the first time.

Johnny Flaherty was the Offaly hero as he hit the crucial second goal although, as Galway supporters will quickly inform you, the footage suggests Flaherty threw the ball to the net.
