It’s hard to beatjamming in Jamaica

- ALESHA DIXON

CONTINUING our series featuring the holiday memories of famous people, this week singer and Britain’s Got Talent judge ALESHA DIXON, 39, recalls her lifetime of adventures…

First holiday I can remember:

It was a weekend in a caravan in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex with my mum and brother. We travelled from our home in Welwyn Garden City by coach and I remember hating the journey – they always seem to take forever when you are a child. My brother and I played on the slot machines in the amusement arcades, trying to win a teddy bear. I think I was about five.

My first trip abroad:

My grandad decided to drive me, my mum, brother and nan to the south of France. I remember eating frog’s legs in a restaurant and absolutely hating them, and being buried up to my neck in sand on the beach. I still have a photograph of the latter somewhere.

My first school trip:

We went to Cuffley Camp in Hertfordshire when I was about eight. It was a brilliant week but I was so happy to come home.

My idea of a romantic getaway:

A trip with my partner to Jamaica. I have been before with family as my father is Jamaican. The music and food are my favourite things in the world. The island is so beautiful, with Ocho Rios standing out in particular. I like going out on boat trips and

snorkelling. My partner loves jet skiing.

My best break:

My nan turned 80 in December and my mum had turned 60 earlier in the year, so I wanted to have a special family holiday. We spent nine days at the LUX South Ari Atoll resort in the Maldives, which was stunning. The food was incredible and we went out on a boat to watch dolphins. It is one of the few places I’ve visited where I have not wanted to come home.

My worst holiday:

I love Spain but we booked a Christmas break there about 15 years ago and got everything wrong. There was no Christmas vibe, the dinner was terrible, the apartment wasn’t great, and the weather wasn’t what we had been expecting. My family vowed never to go away for Christmas again.

Essential holiday item:

Lego Disney Princess sets to keep my four-year-old daughter Azura amused while we travel.

Dream destination:

Cuba. I’ve never been but from what I’ve heard, the vibe of the place appeals to me. I think I would enjoy the music, the architecture, and meeting the people. Japan is a big favourite of mine, too, as I’ve visited for work trips before.
