Simon Yates snatched back the leader’s red jersey at the Vuelta a Espana after a stunning late attack propelled him to victory in Saturday’s stage 14, giving him a 20-second advantage at the top of the general classification. Mitchelton-Scott rider Yates (right) finished two seconds ahead of Miguel Angel Lopez and Spaniard Alejandro Valverde and seven seconds clear of fifth-placed Nairo Quintana, retaking the red jersey after ceding it to Spaniard Herrada on Thursday. He holds an overall 20-second lead over 2009 winner Alejandro Valverde and 25 over Quintana with Lopez 47 seconds back in fourth. “I chose my moment really well and didn’t look back until it flattened out a little. There was a bit of a gap, so I just gave everything to the line,” said Yates. Meanwhile, Team Sky’s Ian Stannard claimed a stunning solo victory in the seventh stage of the Tour of Britain, while Julian Alaphilippe retained his overall lead.
