Thirty-five years anchoring the same programme – indeed he had a dual mandate for a lot of that time when he fronted both the live and evening show – is some record and when I was a kid, I often imagined him mentioning my name, obviously in glowing terms, on TV. That’s how big he was and is.

The Sunday Game will move on without him, but it will never be the same.
