McStay walked the walk with conviction

-

I WAS a little surprised by Kevin McStay’s decision to stand down as Roscommon manager, but he should have few regrets. One of the prices to be paid for Dublin’s dominance is that it has made it all the harder for those managing front-line counties to stay the course. All progress is now incremental and even then it is subjective. I mean what represents progress in Roscommon? An All-Ireland is impossible as is a place in the final, while the last four involves a leap of faith.

In three years McStay (left) led his team to an Allianz League semi-final, promotion back to Division 1 capped with a Division 2 title, reached the Connacht final each year and won it last year while making the last eight of the Championship two years on the bounce.

That is some record and he can walk away with his head held high.

He talked the talk for an age, and then he went and walked the walk with some conviction.

If he returns back to the studio, we should be all ears for him as a pundit.
